Hi all! I’ve been bouncing around the idea of adding a refugium compartment to my Innovative Marine All-In-One 40 gallon reef. I was wondering if anyone has done this and would be willing to share pictures of their setup and experience. Thanks!

Drop in an InTank refugium basket...simplest solution. Don't have any pics on me at the moment.

You definitely will need some type of a fuge light.

This was made specifically for AIO Fuges.

It has a magnet that can attach to the glass and light it from the back, and you then never see it.

IT would require your back glass to be clear though and I don't know if it is on the IM 40 Breeder. It's not on the JBJ 45

You could use a fuge basket or just let it free grow.

I think there's also small algae scrubbers

There you go, this would accomplish the same benefits.

What kind of light do you use? And is the basket necessary?

right now im just runnig a $10 amazon submersible LED, not growing super fast but pulled my nitrates from 30 down to 5 in 6 weeks (granted i only have 4 fish in a 40 gallon)

Oh yeah, fuge lights don't need to be expensive, those are just the neat and clean options specifically designed for Fuges.

You could probably get away with a multitude of other workable, and much cheaper options.

Same way you don't "need" a fuge basket, you can really make it work with just some light in the back chambers and Chaeto.

Sorry that sounds combative, definitely not intended like that at all.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I am looking in to the Innovative Marine Cheatomax light. Not sure on the basket but I guess I could also one one later if it doesn’t work without right?

This chaeto refugium basket has been running on my biocube 29 since 2014. I work with plexiglas well, so I made a media basket and refugium basket to fit side by side in compartment 2 of the AIO. Some people will say you don’t need a basket, I included one cause I wanted to force the water to go through the chaeto instead of taking the path of least resistance straight across the bottom of chamber 2, and into chamber 3, where the pump is located. This basket works like a chaeto reactor, water comes in through the bottom after leaving the media basket, and comes out the top on the opposite side. Then down and out the bottom to chamber 3. You could see the solid chaeto brick that it produced. As far as lighting, I starting with the JBJ light(4 white LED’s), mentioned above, on 24/7. At first I had it on the back glass, but the chaeto turned pale and soft closest to the light. I ended up mounting it with Velcro strips to the back wall, and this seemed to make it grow really good. Finally, after 6 years of constant operation, the JBJ stopped working about 1 month ago. I ended up buying the Smaller IM Chaetomax, and stuck it directly on the back glass. The chaeto is growing beautifully like this with no paleness. I like this one a lot better. Plus, before I had white light scatter coming from behind the tank. Now there is less light scatter from behind and a beautiful pink glow from behind. I haven’t taken pictures with new light but I can add tomorrow.

Wow that looks great! I just ordered the Cheatomax light and can’t wait to try it out!

Some pics I took this morning. This is with the IM chaetomax x 1month. I cut this in half the long way today to give room for new growth.

Hang on reactor with a led grow lamp from IM strapped to it. Great growth. If you don't mind the extras hanging out.

Looks like you are both getting great growth! Can’t wait for mine to show up. Have either of you noticed an increase in pH with the chaeto growth?

I run my reactor overnight and I've never tested the ph in the middle of the night but I'm sure it helps it stabilize. The only thing that straightened out my low ph is a carbon scrubber on my skimmer

I have a CO2 scrubber as well. My hope is that the chaeto will just help lessen the pH drop at night.
