The 3rd section of my sump is set up as a refugium with two large bags of ceramic rings...chaeto...some caulerpa (grape)...and a large bioblock. The rings are on the bottom where water enters compartment. The bioblock is last (sitting flush against floor and divider where water exits)...the algae floats on top. No sand or rock in the refugium or anywhere in sump.

My LFS told me that I should not have the algae and ceramic rings together in the same compartment. He also told me to avoid having (2) kinds of algae together and to remove the caulpera. Are either of these correct?

Also, is there an ideal "order" for how my sump is arranged?

(I inherited this tank from another hobbyist and am trying to figure out if I should make some adjustments)

I don’t think there is an issue having the algae with the ceramic rings but I do agree to remove the caulpera.

Odd advice to not have the ceramic rings and macro algae together, did they happen to say why this is not good?
Remove that caulpera ASAP. Stuff can be a nightmare....
