Refugium from rock to cheato? 350 gallon+ system

So I have a pretty large section of my sump that when I started I put some rock in that had been soaking for months. I figured it could only help when adding fish.

Now I have a decent amount of rock and sand in the "315" gallon display, I have sps frags growing and tons of coraline growth, but I have some growth on the sand and I am starting to get some cyano on the rock and sand. I know this is normal and have had it in every tank I've set up, but I think it's time for some macro algae.

My question is, if I pull all of the rock in the sump out and get chaeto going in that section will it effect anything? Should I add sand to that section under the chaeto?

I have a small (for this volume) skimmer running and a filter roller on this system currently.

No sand, but maybe keep some smaller rocks under the chaeto? Or just ditch all the rocks and get the chaeto and you should be good to go

I briefly looked at your large tank build thread. You might be an addicted reefer with that many tanks.

If your sump is big enough, consider both live rock refugium as well as algae filter/refugium. Each will provide different habitat to increase biodiversity of live food produced for main display.

If it‘s a fairly new tank I wouldn't touch the sump at this point. do you know what your nitrate and phosphate levels are?
