i have 40 gallon sump refugium ready to put in place instead of my wet dry. Can i use play sand? And seed it with a piece of live rock from my display?

I've known a few Reefers as well as a LFS to do this and turned out fine. For me I'd rather use an aragonite based sand though. The bagged dry/non live Coral sand is fairly inexpensive and less like to contain unwanted material.

Cheers, Todd

+1. I would also be concerned with adding the play sand to an existing tank. There may be a good sized algae bloom from the silicates in the play sand which can be hard to fight in an existing tank.
