what do people put in there refugium.
I have just got a second tank in my garage. I have built the sump myself so I have a sizeable section for a refugium. I'm just curious as to what people put in. At the moment I have sand and rock oh and some mushrooms from my other tank.

I have live rock, sand, chaeto, mangrove and tons of pods.

We custom made our fuge/sump too, so we have a 3ft fuge section in a 33long tank.. We run a cryptic fuge that only gets light from the room (so no macro algae down there). I have about a 1 1/2 in sand bed, about 25lbs LR, a mantis shrimp, a hitchhiking crab of unknown origin and my Starry Blenny, who will not stay in the DT. After numerous times of him going down the overflow box into the fuge, I just left him there. There are tons of copepods/amphipods in there as well.

an inch of sugar fine oolitic sand, rock and macro algae for me. will eventually add some snails as well but that's it.

In my sump I have sand live, live rock and red gracillaria. I have never had much success with chaeto. It yellows, dies out and then smells! I am sure it is my lighting below. The red gracillaria helps to reduce nitrates and excess nutrients, acts as a great host for pods and I grab a ball move it up to my display and the tangs love it! I have read the gracillaria (any macro algae they will eat) also helps build the tangs immune system. I found the red is my tang's favorite. My foxface, yellow and blue hippo devour it! Additionally, every time I add the gracillaria I am introducing more pods into my tank directly and EVERYBODY ELSE LOVES THAT! I let a bunch of the gracillaria move around the refugium and I keep a bunch in a breeder net/box.
