Hello all,

I Added some macro algea and a some lighting to my sump recently and the macro is growing but now with the light there is that red algea (looks like a fine layer of red, don’t know the name) and green fuzzy algea growing down there. I’ve heard this stuff grows due to low flow.

is my sump cycling?
Should I put some snails down there?
Should I add a power head since the flow is low?

Thanks for your help!

All of that algae means your refugium is functioning properly. Don't remove it, let there be a diversity of algae. It will help inoculate your system from nuisance algae out breaks.

Similar to an immunization in human beings. We use a refugium to introduce different algae to remove NO3 and for me more importantly, provide a place to allow unwanted algae from the DT to live and remove resources until those resources are exhausted and the algae goes away.
