Can a 20l sump house a beneficial refugium, or is it to small? This is for a 40 breeder setup.

If it is worthwhile to make a refugium in this size, can anyone show me a straightfoward design I can DIY? I am relatively handy.

I think a fuge can benefit any system.... if designed properly they work really well. I don't think you need one that big especially for the size of the main display, however its adding more volume to the overall system which results in stability and that's always a good thing. Just my 2 cents.

That’s exactly what I use on my 180 for a fuge. I drilled it for a 1” overflow bulkhead, and use an MJ1200 to fill it. I bought a cheapo Amazon LED light strip, and I throw away 2-3 gallons of chaeto every month. It grows very well and definitely helps. I also agree with the added benefit of adding volume to the system. Go as big as your space will allow.

Ha... check my build. I have a 40B w/ 20L baffled sump

Sorry, let me clarify. I mean a refugium chamber in 20l, along with skimmer and return

Cool, thats along the lines of what Im looking for. I dont know if you have the info in your thread, but what is the width of each chamber?

Did you think about using a 29 gallon instead?

Question for all: does any one have a 29 gallon sump and how does the height work under the stand?

Yeah, I guess my idea won’t help you then. I’m sure there are plenty of people that have used 20’s as a sump.
Yeah, just wondering if they got a benefit of having a refugium that small in a chamber. Like would they do it that way again?

I have my dimensions in the thread.

I considered the 29H. But designed the sump around the height needed for the skimmer and maximizing refugium size. I didn’t wanna over complicate it by using a skimmer riser to get it to work properly.

Thanks, I'll look for the details in your thread
