Refugium in Red Sea Max S500 Sump

Does anyone have experience with a proper fuge in the standard issue Red Sea Max S500 sump? I have a few rocks in the left most chamber with a small amount of Chaeto, wondering if I could/should put some sand in there, too.

I set up a refugium in my S650 which is basically the same but bigger and you can put whatever you want down there.

I had some miracle mud with algae growing in it.

I removed the refugium after a month or so as I didn’t like what else was growing in the sump, and decided to get an ALR reactor instead
