I know there are going to be opinions on both sides of this one (having read through old threads), but am curious about some additional perspectives.

I am in the process of setting up a 180 gallon tank. The setup will include a Bubble King Double Cone 200 skimmer.

For now, I will probably have fish only, but would like to eventually add coral. When I do get to that point, I would like a mix (including some SPS).

Thoughts on the need for a refugium? If it makes sense to add one, do I add it now or later?

I see refugiums as beneficial for nutrient export method and a place for microfauna to repopulate. Is it needed for a reef tank to thrive absolutely not. I’ve seen nice SPS dominated tanks with no refugium. So it’s almost up to you and how you handle nutrient control via fuge/water changes etc.
