Hello , i just had someone give me
a Vertex Alpha 170 , he did upgrade on his tank and gave i to me , i currently have a small refugium with a bubble mangus , problem is that skimmer only fits on refugium area ,,,, i am debating on taking off the refugium ,,,,, would this be a good move ?

Imo it depends on what you have in your tank. If your trying to keep fish that eat copepods then I would suggest keeping the refugium, it's one of the best breeding grounds. But if not and your refugium is really small then I would say try out the new skimmer if it's capable of removing more nutrients then you current skimmer you might be happier with its performance.

The biggest concern is going to be once you remove your refugium all the nutrients that it was consuming are going to stay in the system instead of being taken up by your macroalgae. So when you do be prepared to do a series of water changes to keep your nutrient levels down until they stabilize. Test regularly to make sure no nutrients spike on you and wet skim to remove some of the nutrients
