Refugium question...

Should a refugium have sand and rocks inside it? My tank has been cycling for 8 weeks now and last week I introduced chaeto on the fuge. The fuge has no sand nor cocks on it. Am just supporting the chaeto with light and minimal water movement.

If I add new sand and rocks, will this not affect the on going cycle? Or can i just leave it this way and hope that the chaeto will grow.

it will grow this way. dont sweat it. it does like good flow though, not minimal. plants and our coral animals are similar in this. its how they breath and eat/absorb nutrients.
sand and rocks are for extra bacterial hiding places. its not a must.

I had miracle mud in mine for a while. Every once in a while, i would have a sand (mud) storm so I got rid of it with no apparent side affect. The chaeto will grow well if you use a plant light. I use a cheap red led and it grows like a weed

hi @joeyrm7 ! thanks for the inputs. btw just one red led bulb over your chaeto? no other lights? most use warm light with 6500k...am curious with the red color.
