Is there a certain type of sand to use in a refugium? how fine of sand do you want? and should i get live or dry sand?

Premium Aquatics sells stuff called "crude" that's scooped from the bottom of their liverock tanks. It's mud/sand with small pieces of rock in it and it's typically loaded with worms, pods, brittlestars, and other beneficial critters. It's like a buck and a half a pound. I've ordered it several different times and have been pleased; you don't need a lot to seed your 'fuge. For the rest of it, I'd use aragonite sand and have some reef rubble thrown in so your critters have places to set up shop.

i see the kits now! at first i didnt see them. awesome thanks dowtish! and mike i thought about that but im just gonna do sand for critters

The GARF stuff is mud too. Which is why i mentioned miracle mud

Not the stuff I have gotten from them numerous times in the past. It has always been very coarse. It had some "mud" mixed in but it was mostly large grained sand with crushed coral and pieces of shell.
