Has anyone ever written, done detail science with Refugium?
Like using what (i.e. Chaeto, etc.) in how much amount, with lighting specs and hours, to reduce how much Nitrate/Phosphate in how much gallon tank within how long period?

Look up Dr. Adey's "Mesocosm" approach. It's covered in Vol 1 & 3 of Dlbeek and Sprung's " Reef Aquarium" series.
Thanks man! Looks like these are some pricey books...I just wanted a simple chart from a sample or so.

There's so many variables we can't test for I don't see any chart being useful. For what it's worth current research looking at macro algae and corals doesn't paint a favorable picture for their use. Here's some videos by scientists looking at the problems reefs are having that may help understand what's going on in your system.

"Coral Reefs in the Microbial Seas" This video compliments Rohwer's book of the same title (Paper back is ~$20, Kindle is ~$10), both deal with the conflicting roles of the different types of DOC in reef ecosystems. While there is overlap bewteen his book and the video both have information not covered by the other and together give a broader view of the complex relationships found in reef ecosystems

Changing Seas - Mysterious Microbes

Nitrogen cycling in hte coral holobiont

BActeria and Sponges

Maintenance of Coral Reef Health (refferences at the end)

Optical Feedback Loop in Colorful Coral Bleaching

Richard Ross What's up with phosphate"

Thanks again! I guess I'll just have to start majoring in Coral biology :)

super super hard in this hobby, so many algaes and so many tank types. we keep enviroments from around the world. It would be hard to get a large enough sample for the test
Probably just a ball park would do as well. like how much nitrate a pound of chaeto suck in a day. 1, 10, 100 ppm? Something like that...no other stuff in the controlled experiment, just the necessary ones.

Hey @timlyg !

Have you checked out BRSTV refugium testing video?
It is the closest thing to controlled testing that I have seen. Basically they find that increasing PAR is the best way to increase nutrient uptake (to the point where they actually had to scale back because 12 hours of high PAR was uptaking too much nutrients) and the amount of chaeto should be based off of your feeding habits instead of your tank size (makes sense because you are trying to remove old food, not excess space or gallons of water).

Cool...Thanks man. BRS has so many videos, I remember watching some of the refugium related ones by them, but not this. Thanks for that. I just want to learn to a point where I could just for example, decide on waiting for Refugium or do a water change, when I see a certain nutrient spike.

Just finished watching these, it's exactly what I wanted. Thanks again man!
