I'm replacing my current refugium with a new Lifereef refugium and was wondering if it was ok to use my substrate from my old refugium. I'm new to this refugium setup. What other items should I put in my refugium for a worry free setup. I was told I should use Chaeto in this tank.

FYI the old refug is about 4yrs old

Thanks for the advice.

how old is the one you are taking out? becuase the older it is the more nasty its oging to have in it, if its only a few months old i wouldnt worry to much about it but if its getting closer to a year, then i would be a careful stirring it up and reusing

my preferance is BB unless your display is BB..

I bought this setup it's been running for 4yrs. I moved it to my house set it up and thats it. Now Im just making changes to the setup.

I'm going with Agra alive live sand and some cheato, going to put a small power head and a led light and use it for a drag tank as well.

i woudlnt spend the money on live sand.... just get dry sand and then get a cup or 2 from a local with a established tank and add to it. wont take it long to be alive

I just went bare bottom, but I have sand in teh tank so I get the filtration benefits there. My fuge section has some rocks in it as well as a frag shelf to hold some intentional and unintentional frags. The frag section has two panorama modules over it and the fuge has a 25W CF lamp, but I think it's too bright and burnt my chaeto :(.

Remember, no sand in the fuge section will make it much easier to clean the detritus out when it settles.

I was thinking about just some live rock, chaeto and some critters no sand. I could put some base rock in and then some sand from my display. Do you have any snails or crabs in your refug? Do you run your fuge light 24/7 or when the tank lights are off your fuge lamp is on?

Sand in display tank and everything is great. New sump setup will be here tomorrow. I am going to put live sand in bottom first and then top off with sand around 2-3inches. Should I put the live rock from my old refugium in the new one along with some chaeto and critters. Thanks for the help.

Umm so many ways to setup sand, bare bottom, live rock umm I better decide. Do the refugium botoms need cleaned?
