I built a refugium for my RedSea Nano along with a ATO tank.

Unfortunately after adding some additional plumbing for my chiller it no longer large enough to hold all the return water when when I shut the pump off. Yes I have a chiller on a 20gal nano do to evaporation causing my home ac system to work harder trying to evaporate all my tank water almost doubling my electric bill on top of the gallon a day of RO water which I’m on a well which uses electric too . So I built a glass lid pumped in a old 25 year old chiller Remove the ATO tank and add a line that comes in from out side where my RO system is. While i was at it I added a hose for fresh air for my skimmer. So i had a thought and thought I would run it by you. So I have this massive old wet dry from my old 170gal from the 90’s D5B05822-E0DE-4803-9C3F-F432E886EE4B.jpeg and doing some measuring I found the media part of the wet dry would fit in my stand. 0D145005-F472-44D9-84C9-4B1E7404E0B7.jpeg so I was going to glue a piece of acrylic to the bottom and use it and use the old the drip tray BC470418-F05F-4D1A-AF78-F52EEDC29559.jpeg as a Frag rack .I was thinking about configuring it this way A01DD945-BCE3-4D8B-A861-E4A4F7375E5F.jpeg . Water interning through top going down through drip tray/Frag rack into the main body where Cheato grows putting the pump return at the bottom of the Cheato section or below that from the bio media section. I was going to use the media I have in the bottom of my current refugium 39C231FE-B10D-45B3-8D57-8C7A9BA77790.png and add some of the old plastic bio squares. Then add a 1 to2 in lair of sand. I want to create a breading place for cope pods 1.for CUC 2. because I have a mandarin and plan on add a couple more types of mandarin. Was wondering what you thought about my idea 1. weather to use sand or not 2. Where to put return at in the Cheato section or the bio media section 3. Should I put a small power head in the media section 4. I’m using a Vortec Vertra S1bwhich can be used external or internal , would you plumb internal or external given the choice. Any other advice recommendation or if it a bad idea. It would add roughly another 15gal to to system make it slightly more stable. Thank you for your time greatly appreciate all your information and advice.

Keeping a mandarin fed in a nano tank is going to be very challenging - let alone more than one. My advice is probably to stick with the one you have and ensure it's well fed (I just have a single mandarin dragonet in my 160-gallon Red Sea, as between it and the various wrasses there's a lot of competition for pods).

Biota Mandarin's are a good way to solve this problem. They are eating prepared foods such as Hikari frozen, PE Calanus, and pellets (easy reefs, tdo, and PE hatchery I think. Also I thought they noted Masstick but don't hold me to that.

Of course if a Mandarin is already in the display then please ignore me :D

It sounds like he already has the one mandarin (not sure if it's a Biota).

I have a mated pair of of blue Mandrin, not Biota which coast me less than 1 Biota, and a six line wrasse. They are very well feed probably a like over feed. I culture my own phyto ,cope pods, brine shrimp ,and during the summer Mosquito larvae. Which I have a feeding tube permanently mounted in my rock structure and use a by-directional dosing pump attached to my controller which doses which ever food I have setup 3 times a day. It’s funny the 2 Mandarin know when it about to come on ,because they will swim over a wait right in front of it a couple minutes before it comes on. It cool has they can tell time. I want the pods in the sump are for the Mandarin yes but I also want then as part of my CUC. I don’t believe in or use filter media like socks I rely solely on natural bacteria‘s CUC ,pods and other little critters sand worms along with hermit crabs and snails.
