hey fellow reefers i am new to the hobby and would like to set up a refugium i have a 29 gallon biocube all seems to be ok with it other then how difficult it is to keep NO3 in check i know its kind of hard with a small tank but i am not able to upgrade to a large one at this time question 1 is how large does a refugium need to be to effectively help? question 2 how do i install one without drilling my tank?question 3 can i do it without setting up a sump? the sump in the back it fine i just want a somewhat large refugium can i do that? PLEASE HELP

Many people use the 2nd chamber in the bio-cubes as a small fuge, adding cheato and a small 5w submersible LED. Also there are several skimmers that will fit in the back chamber as well.
Just to give you hope. I've been running my 26g for 2+ years now and haven't had No3 for the past 2 :) I have a 3.3g HOB fuge filled with LR, chaeto and a 2" sb.
As your tank matures so too will the beneficial bacteria. Keep up on your water changes and the No3 will disappear.

I've seen guys drill the pack panel of a bio cube and install an overflow to a sump/fuge and then a return pump is required to put the water back into the tank. This is best done when the tank is empty though. small cubes are limited by their space and design. They can be very successful ecosystems though. I think you are stuck with what you have unless you want to go the route already described in the above posts.

My fuge has an intake pump only and the return is gravity fed. No chance of overflowing.
I know the bio-cubes having owned an 8g. Your best bet is to create a fuge out of your back chambers or like suggested above, drill your tank for an external fuge.

I have an overflow on my 24 gallon that goes to a 20 gallon sump refugium! It's been working great. It was my first attempt at a refugium and I gotta tell you it took my tank to another level! The overflow works great. I had reservations about it but the only way to figure if its gonna work or not is to actually do it.
