Refugium

Does anyone use sand or refugium mud in there sumps? If so what's the benefits from it?

I used to, but found that all the solid waste from the display tank would get stuck down in the refugium substrate, so i removed it. Now the amphipods have easy access to 100% of the "krud" coming down. I only have a few pieces of live rock rubble in the refugium now, to help macroalgae anchor.
