Ok i am completely knew to keeping a reef tank. what does a refugium consist of? do i need one for a reef tank?

You do not need one, but they are beneficial to have IMO. Most people have a small space in their sump which consists of some macro algae and maybe some rock and sand.

A refugium is a place to culture and breed beneficial organisms for your system. You can have a mixture of things in your refugium from macroalgae (i.e. chaetomorpha) to live copepods/ amphipods. They are usually in the middle compartment of the sump and although very beneficial to any system are not essential to a system.
