? Regarding macro in reef display

I have a 20 gallon aio nano. No way to plumb a refugium. Can I use one of those hang on/in acclimation boxes with all the holes in them to hold a ball of chaeto. It will be on same light schedule as display, obviously.

I have Chaeto just sitting on my sand bed. It keeps nutrients in check and I always have plenty of pods.

Wend I had my nano I bought one of those external marina breeding boxes and done this.
It worked really well with caleurpa mexicana
