I’m in the very early stages of planning a new build. Unfortunately my living room just isn’t big enough for a tank 200+ gallons, but fortunately it can be when I knock the wall down Dividing the living room and the garage.
The garage door has already been taken out and framed up so it is essentially a storage room. But the floor is still sloped and has about a 3” drop from the rest of the slab. Now I could have concrete poured and level it out but considering the expense of the tank it self and me being a carpenter I can do the work myself and save a ton.
so here is what I’m thinking. I knock the wall out and open up my living room giving me about 13 more feet to work with. Run floor joist directly on the existing slab and cover it with 3/4” plywood and put down water proof flooring. Now I’ll also be waterproofing the plywood in the area where the 72”x30”x24” tank will sit with red guard or something similar. But my concern is the weight of the tank.
So any of you contractors, carpenters, builders or engineers see any issues with running these joist on 16” centers and reinforcing them side to side, then setting a tank this size on the floor?
