Remove glass, cut, & re-seal aquarium

Alright, I'll soon be taking down my 44 gal pentagon tank. At first I was just going to toss it since the top few inches of glass is stained/scratched. But then I though, hey it fits perfect where it is, why not make it a frag tank. It's too tall I told myself. Well then, cut it, myself told I. So heres what im thinking. The tank is 25" tall, way to high for a frag tank, and the silicon need resealing real soon. I want to take apart the tank, remove all silicon and cut the glass down to between 12"-18"(have not decided yet), then put it all back together. Drill it, add a small sump and presto a nice frag tank. My problem is I know nothing about replacing silicon in an aquarium and even less about cutting the glass down. Am I crazy for doing this? Any tips? Suggestions? Everyone add your 2 cents. In case you dont know what shape this tank is here is a pic. Thanks in advance.

I have replace a panel in glass cube tank before. It was not hard. Just get a good supply of utility razor blades and take your time. I would have a glass shop cut the panels though. Just use GE silicone 1 to re seal it with. Just make sure it it is pesticide free.
 
I've resealed tanks with no problems, just make sure the glass is as clean as possible. Rubbing alcohol and a razor blade will help. Not sure about cutting the glass panels - Wouldn't trust myself to do it but if you can, more power to ya!
 
I heard piano wire makes it way easier than a razor
Even better is to use dental floss. I used the wider, flat kind to remove silicone baffles from my sump. What took me 4-5 minutes of work with a razor blade was done in 20 seconds using floss. Ridiculously easy, and you should have it in the house already.

Once the panels are separated, the razor blade can clean up the silicone excess.

The preparation is the most important part, take your time to make sure everything is nice and clean. When it is time to put the tank back together use RTV108 (clear) or RTV103 (black) as these are adhesives and not just sealants.
 
I took apart and reassembled my 135g tank at the beginning of April. It was labor intensive, but it wasn't difficult. Just make sure you clean your panels VERY good before re-assembly, or else you'll be swearing and promising yourself that you'll never try and assemble a tank again.
 
I just made my first diy tank. I had a local shop cut the glass to size because it's 3/8". But it was pretty easy to silicone together. Absolutely use RTV silicone and not the stuff at HD or Lowes. I got mine at Graingers. If you are messy with the silicone, conside using painter's tape to keep from getting silicone too far out onto the glass. Here is what mine looked like.

What is the advantage of the RTV adhesive over, aquarium silicon like the AGA/aqueon silicon.

Also when placing placing glass for joining, how tight the the two pieces need to come together. Not sure if I'm asking this right. People have said that they can't get a razor between the panes so are you trying to squeeze all the silicon out only leaving the littlest amount, then adding a bead to the inside corners. Hope this makes sense.
 
I can't speak to the difference between RTV and AGA silicone, because I don't know anything about the AGA. The RTV differs from the silicone you get at HD or Lowes in that the RTV is adhesive and HD or Lowes silicone is a sealant. The bond between the glass and silicone is much stronger.

This was my first tank and I laid a bead of RTV down and set the glass into it. I pressed it together but not with a lot of pressure. And then clampped it in place using enough force to hold it but not really squeezing it to force out more RTV. I didn't even clamp the sides to the bottom, but used aluminum foil tape to hold it in place. The foil tape grips well and doesn't stretch. Then I used the corner clamps at the top and the 2 long clamps at the to hold the sides in place. So to answer your question, no, I didn't try to squeeze all the RTV. It seems to have ended up a pretty tight fit, meaning I haven't tried it, but I'd bet it wouldn't be too easy to get a razor blade between the pieces of glass in this tank either. I then did a bead along the inside of each seam.

I seem to remember reading somewhere, or maybe it was a club meeting with a custom tank builder, but somebody was laying the bead of RTV down and then laying a fine monofiliment fishing line in the center of the bead before they set the glass together, preventing the weight of the glass from pushing all the RTV out. I haven't tried that... yet. Also I've heard of doing a double bottom. Say you are using 3/8" glass and cut the bottom for a 2'X4' tank. Then use a second sheet of glass cut 3/4" shorter in both directions. Center the smaller glass on the bigger glass and you have a 3/8" dropped rim to set your 3/8" side glass up against. That gives you very well fit corners with way less fuss getting things lined up AND gives you a 90 degree corner to RTV the glass into which will be much stronger. I did consider making the bottom glass 1/4" bigger in each direction which would make a 1/8" 'lip' that would stick out from under the sides. That could be an out side the tank extra bead of RTV, but I didn't do it and I don't think on a shallow frag tank it's a big deal.

BTW, I added a coast to coast weir (overflow) and cut the top with a single shallow 'V' from one side to the other, rather than the traditional teeth. The flow over the shallow V works very nicely but I had the tank set up too deep, so I needed to lower the overflow wall. I got out my belt sander with some 80 grit and sanded down the weir by 1/4" and made the center of the V a bit deeper. I have to admit, I was concerned about creating a leak somewhere in the RTV with all the vibration of the belt sander. But it wasn't an issue. The new frag tank is set up and full of coral and doing fine.
