Remove or keep sand….2 sand dwelling wrasse

I’ve been thinking about removing my sand but I do have a melarunus and a yellow corris wrasse. I would like to add a second gyre to blow on bottom of tank. Is it possible to keep these wrasse in bare bottom? I really don’t want to get rid of them.

They would probably adapt just fine to sliding under rocks.. They wouldn't prefer it that way though. Add the gyre and see how the sand lays and maybe you can keep a corner with sand, or under the rocks..

It definitely would not remove the sand, because of those specific wrasses.

have seen some pictures on this forum of people with bare bottom tanks and small containers with sand for their wrasse tucked away in a corner or under rocks.

Something like that, yes. I'm not sure if I'd recommend it or not. I've done it in QT, but not in a display.

My hesitancy comes from the way sand-sleeping wrasses hit the deck when startled.

A person can sleep on the ground in the middle of a field and live, but it's not an ideal environment. I'd give the wrasses sand, or trade them out for some wrasses that don't sleep in the sand.

A decent size box of sand will work. Sometime they take a bit to find it but then they will go to it every night.

Only reason I have sand is because I love my wrasses more then the husbandry duties of keeping the sand looking good.

Shouldn’t need anything special, however you must be aware that the sand won’t always stay at that part of the tank it will occasionally get disturbed and you will find sand here and there.

It's not hard at all, get the gyre in and on the settings you want and your tank will show you where the sand can be

I turned my current gyre all the way up and also the other pw head and it blew large sand storm. Now one of corners is bare if i add the other gyre to replace powerhead then it will be never ending storm. So i started syphoning a littlebit of sand

Wrasses like sand. While they enjoy playing in rocks, those that sleep in the substrate really do need it to be content.

One sample: removing the sand didn’t go well for me, I ended up with a dead wrasse, but maybe try a sand box as suggested before trading the fish …
