I'm looking for opinions on removing the dish of sand I have in my QT for a yellow corris wrasse. It doesn't use the sand to sleep, it hides under some bioballs. The wrasse has been in QT 3 weeks and eats fine. I'm going to start copper treatment today (raising it to therapeutic levels over 10 days) and I'm wondering if I should just pull the sand out.

I know it will pull some of the copper out so I'd prefer to remove that bit of instability if possible.

If the wrasse isn't using the sand anyway, I'd say go ahead and pull it.

Worst comes to worst, you can always drop it back in there later if you need to.

That's kinda what I was thinking. One other concern I just thought of is the bio filter. There's going to be an even bigger hit on that with the copper if I pull that out, no? I guess I can just keep watching ammonia and do water changes if it creeps up.

I'm gonna pull it :)

Potentially but unlikely to be marginal/noticed, especially if you have a HOB with sponge for bacteria colonization.

Just to add: I've been doing experimentation recently on sand and copper absorption. The absorption rate is minimal (nothing like it is with rock), and I'm close to saying just use a light layer of sand in your QT if you want to. ;)

Awesome! I pulled it out already but good to know if I need to add it later :)
