Sadly I've neglected my tank a bit due to traveling on the weekends and looking after my son when I am home. The left panel has accumulated quite a bit of green algae. I thought I could just use the metal scraper on the mag float but the algae is just too on there. Coraline will come off but not this stuff.

I'm planning to do major maintenance on the tank this weekend and was wondering what would be the easiest way to remove this algae? Old credit card? Or will I have to razor blade it?

That sounds like coralline to me? I'm not aware of any green algae that is tougher to get off then coraline...

Whenever I run into a particularily rough patch, I just reach in to the tank and grab my magnet scraper and use a little elbow grease to get it done. Its yet to fail to clear off a problem.

If glass , a razor will do the best job. Just like anything else touching the glass , be careful :)

A razor scraper or a metal putty knife works for me.

As long as it's a glass tank then go with a razor blade, on acrylic I recommend an old gift card.

It could be coraline but I always thought coraline was pink and purple. And coraline usually grows in spots. This is more like a blanket.

sorry to resurrect this older thread - but I've got the same issue. it's not coralline. It's more of something like a stain (but I successfully removed it). The flipper magnet scraper side doesn't touch it - no matter how long and hard you scrub at it. the flipper felt side also didn't work out well (it worked a little bit).

The trick for me was a hammerhead (BRS) cleaner and a ton of back/forth with lots of elbow grease. The velcro (hook side - not felt side) is the only thing that did the trick for me. I tried replacing the felt velcro with hook velcro on the flipper - but I suspect it doesn't have enough pressure with the smaller magnet.
