so odd question I found a used RS 425 and I am kinda in the market for a FW planted tank but with the future possibility of a sea horse tank.
i was wondering if one could remove the overflow and silicone glass over the holes but in the future set it back up as a reef?

or would this be asking for trouble? IDK just a random idea

Why not just temporarily cap the overflow and return pipes and keep the water level below the overflow comb intake?

I probably wouldn’t start messing with the overflow itself (especially if you plan to later use it for saltwater).

why wouldn't you want overflow for running those systems ? just curious

it all about the look dont 'want the big black overflow box messing up with the scape just give a more realistic look IMHO
I am leaning towards a clear silicone aquarium anyway then say this tank up up for an OK price and started thinking well maybe. haha

I am after a 3' tank anyway so this prob. is out ,but worth a thinking about i guess.

Oh, you meant removing the entire overflow? Yeah, definitely not advisable if you want to use it for saltwater at some point in the future. Factory grade silicone work is always going to be better than what the vast majority of us can replicate.

I’m confused why you would even own a redsea system and use it for FW. I own 2 red sea tanks and know for a fact it will ruin it if you try to remove the overflow. These tanks arent meant to be torn apart. Why not just keep the overflow and still have a planted FW tank? Doesn’t make sense to me.

It's fairly common for people to remove overflows and patch the holes. I'm not sure what makes a Red Sea so special. If you want to, I don't see why not.

Oh wow removing that whole system ........ sorry I thought you meant just the tubes inside. Yeah I would definitely not attempt to do anything like that myself .

These tanks are awesome for running reef systems and designed specifically for that purpose . I would run it as a reef and if you want to do a planted FW tank which are sweet too then I would get the tank designed for that purpose.

Essentiallly what you are doing is buying a porcshe 911 turbo and wanting to convert it into your grandmas point A to point B grocery car... yes it can be used for that but why do it ? haha

Good luck man !

haha funny
but I hear ya some ppl out there do run FW planted with a sump and that is a possibility IDK just got me thinking here.

i have alot of options form no 2nd tank to a basemant man cave /fish room that would be $$$$ to finish out but would be cool. basically I want it all...haha

I would think that running a sump for fresh water would have similar benefits for a freshwater tank too. You just obviously would not need the ATO system running with the sump that red sea tanks offer.

But yeah maybe in your sump you could grow out some feeder fish? and then up above you have a freshwater predator tank? Bass ? cichlids ? Arrowanas ?

Possibilities are endless
