I recently purchased a 180 gallon acrylic tank which has the back painted black. The seller stated that it was spray paint, is there any way to safely remove it?

If he didn't sand it, you may be able to get it off with compressed air or a pressure washer. If he prepped it good, then you're stuck sanding it off and buffing it out. Either way, you're going to have to buff the hell out of it if you want that to be a viewable panel again.

could try small area, problem may arise with some paints will bind differently than others to different polymers, that removing via a chemical might be as troublesome if not more with some than manual removal and buffing.
I know for acrylic signage we use mineral spirits on a paper towel if theres over paint past the stencil. But... this is also a use that clarity is not nearly as important. So...
