Can I get ideas on the best way to remove my substrate? Also, anyone with BB please chime in on what they do for the wrasses sleeping arrangements (wrasses that sleep within the sand) too. Many thanks

Suck it out during water changes until you have it removed. This is as easy on the eco system as you are going to achieve and happens over a period of time. As for the wrasses, will they take over large empty tub worm tubes. This is what my Tail Spot Bennie is doing.

You could always leave a small area with sand, just be sure to contain it with rocks. Or hide a small plastic container with sand in it.

Thanks guys.

Why do you want to go BB?

Black coloration in my sand/substrate. I think it's holding or releasing PO4.

Question for those who have either completely removed or replaced their sand/substrate:
How did you do it? The process I'm trying is taking too long. I'm removing the sand during water changes via a large hose. I really don't want to scoop out the sand because of stirring the junk up and wiping my DT out, but this looks like a process that might take a year! Am I thinking crazy or should I be ok (just scoop out the sand and do a decent size WC)?

How deep is your sand bed? Siphoning during a water change is the best/safest method.

Use rubbermaid container(s) with sand for wrasses that sleep in the sand bed.
