Okay guys I'm in a bit of a dilemma-

Before doing proper research on different types of aquariums I found what I thought was an "amazing" deal on a "55 gallon Hexagon aquarium" that just needed a bit of TLC.

So we had the guy bring it to us and bought it. It was older with about 4 inches of sand in the bottom and pretty dirty.

Once he dropped it off and left I started to immediately clean it so excited I could barely contain myself. I was however completely devastated to find out once getting the sand cleared out that it was cracked about 1/3 of the bottom and wouldn't hold water. After getting laughed at by my husband for not verifying the tank "held water" with the seller (Kind of thought that was a given since ya know that's what aquariums purpose are) we measured it and the measurement's he gave us vs what it really was were completely off. Turns out, it was only a 35 gallon tank. *que tears*

So I went and did proper research and ended up purchasing another aquarium that was 70 gallons, drilled, with a sump and all the goodies. So actually it worked out a little better because now that I have seen how much better it looks hiding the filtration I prefer that to HOB methods.

But now that I have started the 70 gallon tank I am hooked and want to put another aquarium in another part of the house. So, has anyone taken the bottom out of a hexagon aquarium before? I am trying to decide if it is worth it to take it out, replace with plexiglass where we can drill holes to do a built in over flow and add a sump or if I should just sell and buy another one. My husband works quite a bit so if it is super intensive to replace the glass then It may not be the best option for me.

Just curious what everyone else has done in a situation like this. Is it more economical to do it one way vs the other? It really is a beautiful tank and stand I hate to see it go to waste.

I defiantly wouldn’t replace the bottom with plastic if the tank is glass. To repair the bottom with glass I would disassemble the entire thing and rebuild.
For me this would be a hard pass. At best if the tank is non tempered. I’d consider saving glass for sump baffles.

It sounds like more than what I will be able to do on my own so I will likely just sell and get a different unit. Thank you!
