replace sand

Depends on what animals you're planning on. Sand shifters need sand not gravel.

If you decide to change remove a section at a time over a week or so, not all at once.
I have one Sleeper Goby.
Just want a slightly larger grain.
It dusts everything with the sand I have now. One of those regrets you get although he does keep the bottom clean

I have pretty fine grain sand and would like to replace it with something coarser.
Thoughts?
How long has this sand been in the system and how deep is it? How big a tank and how much water in the entire system?
Problem is if you change only some at a time, it will mix before you get it all out, if that it what your going for. You could mix it and the coarse will end up on top.
If the sand is not too old or shallow you could just pull it out. But an inch or deeper or a few months old your better off pulling out some at a time. But, if you have been currently stirring it up, all of it, you also can just pull it out.
What I'm trying to say is, if there isn't a lot of detritus built up it is safe to pull it.
