Replaced trident reagents now numbers are way off

I just replaced my reagents. Trident is reading alk 7.3 cal 568. My Hanna is reading 9.3 and Red Sea is reading 450. (These are the numbers I keep my tank at)

i have calibrated it twice and get all whacked out the next test.

This was the first time I have ever replaced them also. But I followed the instructions (I think)

It’s the one thing I don’t like about the Trident. This has happened to me as well. A calibration usually gets it closer to normal. But I’ve accepted that stability is what to watch for.
 
I measure my tank with salifert kits, then calibrate the trident using tank water and the salifert numbers entered as the reference values.

So I calibrated to my Hanna readings and the next test my alk went from 9.5 to 7.8 what the heck

1. What reagents are you using? Before and after?
2. You said you calibrated. Did you save the calibration fluid? If so do a test using your manual test kit for Alk - what is that number?

Don't do anything else until you test the calibration fluid manually and compare that number. The last thing you want to do is start chasing numbers which you don't know who is on first or the real number. Also for the future keep a bottle of Fauna Marin multi reference solution. It lasts 6 months after opening and good to have in these cases.

I calibrated it to my tank water using Hanna since I have been running my tank for a while going off of these numbers. I travel a lot and got the trident more to see stability when I’m gone. I’m just confused why I calibrated it to my tank water than next test would drop 2 dkh. I know I’m not using the the Neptune calibration fluid but I dosnt make sense

Not Hanna. Standard titration tests. I observed a similar pattern to the one you're stuck in. And I did some experimenting with the test methods I had available to me.

I made reference standards per guidance I found from Randy (using calibrated autopipettes and scales), and tested Hanna, Salifert, and Trident with them. Only Salifert was spot-on. Hanna was off by just over 0.5 dKh and Trident (calibrated and recalibrated with Neptune reference solution) was "off" by more than 1 dKh.

Overall, I believe test kits are less error-prone than electronic measurement methods (don't have to worry about equal glass thickness, fingerprints/smudges, microbubbles, water tint, battery SoC, etc). With test kits, it’s basic chemistry. That’s it.

Now, is this the most scientifically rigorous method? Of course not. It's far less than ideal. But we're using hobby grade equipment here, so we need to work within the bounds of what we have available. More than accuracy, what we should focus on is precision and trust. Ultimately, it doesn't matter a whole lot if we keep alkalinity at 8.5 or 9 dKh. What matters is that it's stable. Which is why we need precision.

The accuracy portion is more based on trust. And since the most accurate measurements of the reference solution I created were obtained by using Salifert titration kits, I decided to place my trust in them and use those as my golden standard upon which everything else is referenced to.

I now rely on the trends provided by Trident, and verify monthly with Salifert and it's been working well for me.

What I was asking is if you took the left over calibration fluid and ran a manual test with your Hanna checker? Or whatever manual test kit you have. This way you can see what that kit says and compare it to the number on the calibration fluid.

Does that make sense?

So when you put the calibration fluid in the Hanna tester and ran the test it was 1dkh lower than what was on the calibration bottle? It should be +/- Hanna's tolerance. 1 dkh seems rather high.

The Hanna tester was 1 dkh higher. I’ve tested fresh batches of salt water and the Hanna seems to be very close on that.

One issue is the Trident cal solution is only good for like 8 hours once opened. If he tested with the Hanna after that it’s a total crap shoot
 
This is the reason why i dont calibrate my trident. if i replace the fluids and its giving me same reading as before, then i just leave it. Just as long as it is consistent! Only time i calibrate is when i see a unusual numbers.
