Replacement pump recommendation?

I currently have a Ecotech mp40 in my tank and the flow is great, however on the other side I am using a koralia 850 and it has been driving me crazy for as long as i can remember. the noisiest aspect of my tank by far... it has some sort of clicking that it just doesn't go away unless I stick my hand in tank and then hold it a certain way.. but as soon as I let go it then begins to rattle all over again.

was curious what you would recommend? Was thinking maybe the new kOralias however didnt really know if it would be smart to go down the same path.. this pump is mostly for supporting flow and keeping detritus off the sand...any advice ?

I agree, just don’t know if I can justify another mp40 purchase along with a reef link for some extra flow.. perhaps my op was confusing, but I will not be removing the mp40.

Makes sense it is a lot of money to throw into a pump. Mayb another Koralia would suffice. Or fix the one you have most likely the impeller.

I have 2 Sicce Voyager 2 pumps in my QT tank. They are priced right and quiet, but they are kinda bulky and *****.

If you replace the impeller it should stop doing that. Very cheap repair, so even if it doesn't work you're not out much. A LFS might allow you to try a replacement impeller and return it for credit on a new pump if it doesn't work.

You're probably right. Would be a cheap alternative however I feel it will just be as it is now and just be a temp fix. Its not as if it just recently started to do this, its done this as long as I've known, just sometimes easier than others to drown out. The tanks right next to my bed and somehow its the loudest part of my tank, my mp40 on max speed is quieter and just a noticeable hum.

Does anyone know if its possible to connect two mp40's without a reef link? It says on the website all *W* labeled pumps are able to be connected to each other. Then below that it says you can connect it to a reef link and control them wirelessly.. Just curious how it all works out..

Koralia, with their heat, noise and power usage compared to how much power equates into water movement a total piece of crap. IMO.

Mp are nice, but not directional, and after replacing the wet side so many times on a pump that costs how much?

Get a Jebao RW or whatever their latest model initials are. Much smaller than koralia, way more powerful, and dc controllable. A third the price of mp's, and directional. Have them on tanks all over the place, for years, and find them reliable.

It is a gen2 unfortunately... but I have a 65 gallon tank. This is my current setup.

Final Word - Old Pump
A gen2 deserves to be replaced. Just as Hydor, they released the gen3. The gen3 is much more like the gen1's from what I've read....so a worthy option to consider if you otherwise like the form and cost....they still offer one of the nicest prices! BTW, both of my gen1's are still running and on their original impellers....so Hydor may be back to their good old selves with gen3.

Brace Yourself For Controversy
You may be happy with your mp40, but for the cost shouldn't it be able to flow the whole tank? You really need two pumps....three or four if you tried their smaller mp10. Two mp40's seems like a lot of cost for this size tank.

I have two mp40's that I used to use on my 50 Gallon....a 6-inch-shorter version of your tank...and that's how I felt.

Could There Be More Controversy?
I do think that with the taller tank you'd like two mp40's better than I did. I'm glad that I got mine for closer to free than full price.

I also think you'd like in your tank what I replaced my mp40's with just as much as I did.

I replaced my two mp40's with a set of three Turbelle® nanostream® 6045's. They're only $78 these days....I paid almost twice that much around when they first came out! (Yes, three 6045's beat the performance of a pair of mp40's in a tank very similar to yours.)

Wow, thanks for the thorough advice and ironically I was looking at these just now.. was curious if you were to purchase some, which would you do? I currently enjoy the ability to control my mp40, but really agree with what you’re saying... it doesn’t seem to do as much as I’d expect and to see people have just two on say a 220 and it be adequate. Don’t really wanna drop $ for a mp40 plus then will need a reef link so now I’m close to $400..

I guess I could get used to the two nanaostreams considering I’ve been fine with the Koralia and it’s non controllable. Would you recommend two nanaostreams vs 1 stream? Don’t really wanna deal with spending the $$ for two.

Bought a Current eFlux Wave Maker kit (1 powerhead, control, etc.) and one more powerhead-it will support 3 powerheads total. Works pretty good. Quiet. And pushes around a lot of water in my 90. Cheers!

I run the 6045's on a "tide simulator" using a controller, but two appliance timers will do the job too. Set them up so the first pump(s) will provide a few hours of flow in one direction before the timers switch to the pump(s) on the other side of the tank. After a few more hours in that setup, the timers will switch back again. Like the tides! Cheap, simple and the corals love it. I would use four 6045's, but you could definitely get away with starting with just two – one on each side. Add the other two after your corals have had a good chance to grow.

If you choose the controllable, then you'd still want at least two. I'd probably pick 6055's because I like the insane amount of flexibility you get to place and point them where you want. Their flow isn't so wide that you're limited on your ability to aim them either.

The 6095's are stronger than the 6055's in terms of GPH and are much wider flow. They're a bit pricier too. I would prefer the 6055's to these myself since the 6055's are more similar in flow to the 6045.

The 6040 is tiny. The Stream 3 is beastly. Costs are comensurate at $140 and $350.

They're both very compact for the flow they provide, and both are more or less optimized to provide flow from any location in the tank....bottom, side, behind rocks, etc.
