Replacing HOB filter. Can I just switch them out?

I’ve seen people say to run both at once, or use as much filter media as possible in the new filter.

however, is this necessary and if so why? I replace my sponges often, just whenever they seem too dirty after a rinse. Is this not just like replacing the HOB altogether?

If u replaced the whole filter you would have new housing and a new pump in addition to new filtration media...

Sorry, my question is, can I just switch the two filters out? I see advice all the time saying not to without using some old media or running both for a certain amount of time in order to prevent bacteria die off. However, I’m not sure that the die off from the HOB is worth worrying too much over. Just looking for other opinions

It’s not in marine tanks. For freshwater aquariums it can matter a lot. For marine tanks, it is likely the majority of nitrifiers are in live rock, hence why biomedia in a filter can not matter much.
