Things seemed to be going well. Water tested good. Livestock doing well. Feeding frozen food (about half a chunk dissolved in salt water) every other day. I thought everything checked out...then boom, algae. Did a 20% water change a over the weekend w/out improvement. Have about 9 snails (turbo, etc.)

Appreciate any advice.

Do you have phos?
Also what test kit? I don't think that ammonia is accurate.

I belive its just diatoms part of the ugly stage.
I went all in on the Hanna test kit. The Ammonia test does seem to be all over the place.

How can I get rid of diatoms? Or does it just take its course?

As someone said, pods will help... id also suggest a cheap acclimation box and getting some sort of caulerpa macro algae in the acclimation box. Macro will help...offset(?) impact of the likely, subsequent hair algae.

if you siphon it, airline tubing works as it is narrow and you won't suck up a ton of sand.
