I saw this Elkhorn while I was down at the shore during low tide! What do you think the par that it was getting was? Coral sure is resilient!
 
From what I remember, corals that are exposed during low tides will excrete a protective slime. You've probably seen it while fragging corals. I'm not sure if the slime coating has any affect on UV (like a coral sunscreen), but it seems to work for them!
