Hiya, Ive had my 80 gal reef set up for about 2 years, it originally had 20lbs of sand, some being siphoned away. I purchased live sand (now knowing its useless) and rinsed it a couple times but when i put it in the tank it was still extremely cloudy, i moved some of the sand but honestly just placed the new sand on top because my sandbed before was less than an inch, if that even. I added another 20lb bag does anyone have information on how long do i know if it basically set off a cycle?
Do i test after a day, a week?

I’d monitor every 24-48hrs til things settle down, logic being testing reagents being cheaper than coral…
Id add in Ammonia testing too, believe it or not…

I’m liking the Hanna checkers, esp the High range nitrate, good use of 50 bucks…..good luck finding reagents tho

the notorious cheapo API test kits are good enough for what your are doing…I’d still check out the Hannas if you got the cheese

Dr Tim’s and Brightwells Microbacter products should work I’d wager… That ubiquitous Microbacter 7 does work …personal experience

If you got a sump or somewhere to make up for the reduction in bio-surface, I’m liking the spheres over those crumbly plates and bricks… I put my “balls” in a mesh sack and in the sump

that thread shows partial rinsing to be bad, but complete total rinsing to be good

your clouding isn’t cycle-affecting detritus it’s silt cloud from the new sand

just redo it all like we do above and your clouding will be fine you didn’t recycle

if you study that thread, you can see how to pre rinse the new 20 pounds in order to be cloudless. Use tap water on the new sand for two hours, final rinse in ro

rinsing new sand can never, ever, ever cause a cycle even if you boiled it for nine hours.

sometimes after posting that six year thread of proof someone will debate on whether or not rinsing sand in tap is bad but that discussion won’t happen if the thread is studied before inquiry
