I run my return line below the water level it stops the splashing, cuts down on humidity and keeps salt creep to almost no existent. The draw back is the filter sock is harder to change on mine because the return line runs into the middle of the sock. If your sump is a production model and the return line runs above or behind the sock find a pvc elbow that fits the return and angle it over the sock and then extend it down into the sock just below the water line
