today, my favorite clownfish jumped out of a half inch gap and died. Most of my coral are dead from a temp swing from heating failing and there is algae all over the tank. I am thinking about restarting the tank because there is only 2 fish and a couple of corals.:(

But why? Your live rock is well on its way to becoming established, no need to waste all that good bacteria. Get your tank fully covered and buy a new heater with built in thermostat plus a separate temperature controller (I use inkbird controllers) and you should be set!

I have an InkBird controller. The reason I’m thinking about restarting is the algea I have been trying to get rid of for months and since I only have 2 fish and 3 corals I can give them to a friend for a short time and get them back when I’m ready.

The next tank will get the same algae, so don’t toss rocks. Simply take tank apart, clean algae a certain way to kill it, put back a clean system, rinse your sandbed in tap water as we’ve done on a thousand rebuilds, and you’re set. If you want to see the rebuild in motion we are prepping a willing tank right now for a big job, the link is avail

Thanks

let’s see pics of the job, your tank. I know you’re likely going to toss it all but wanted to see what potential we had before

and because in thirty seconds I’ll find a matching tank before after set from our work logs, hopefully convincing you to...

:)

ditch live rocks go with dry, get dinos until next summer. we can save this tank sight unseen, no misbehaving reef can withstand a rip clean. It’s bootcamp for aquariums they come out chewing straight leather and sinew as a hobby on the other side.

I hate to hear that man. I enjoyed following your build. I had a few bigger setbacks and am finally going in the right direction. I hate to jump on the bandwagon but I do agree that you need to find out what's causing the algae issue so it doesn't reoccur further down the line again. Good luck!

I am sorry about the fish jump - did not know they could aim for such a gap

What job could be harder than SeaBass’ job from 2016 ish:

the after pic is a cliffhanger
just know my after pic collection is like a set of rubies

can we do surgery on your tank

The reason that there is so much algae is because my only nutrient export was a water change every week or So because my skimmer stopped working.

My condolences, it’s hard to lose a fish. Most people think it’s stupid to be upset over a fish but it’s not, I mourned for weeks. I also considered leaving the hobby because of it. But just try and hold on... I encourage you to get a new heater and keep up with your weekly water changes. Maybe do the minimum for now and in a while I promise you, you’ll want to get back in it again. And a while probably isn’t as far away as you think. I’m not sure what heater you had but I’m using an Eheim Jager I used it on a forty gallon and now a twenty gallon and it works amazing and I haven’t had an issue so far... I don’t even have an ink bird on it. Maybe you might wanna try one of those out?
And you’re obviously an amazing reefer, you’re the youngest reefer I’ve ever met and I mean you catch lobsters to pay for your stuff... you’ve got a passion for it. Just hold tight bro, things will get better. Without the lows in this hobby we’ll never get the highs.

EDIT: I saw your tank is an AIO have you put a light in one of the back compartments? It helps centralize algae growth back there and not in your tank. That’s what I’m doing... I get the little bit of algae here and there in the display but nothing terrible. The back compartment looks like I stuffed the grinch in it it’s so full of GHA.

Thanks, i just got an Eheim Jager little while back. The refugium in the back compartment is a great idea. It’s definitely upsetting, but just have to get through it and back into it. Thanks again for the help and kind words
