Hello and happy new year. I've never done a build thread for my setup since I started in the hobby a year and a half ago. My current setup is a 75 gallon mixed reef. I built most of the filtration myself and it took a year or so of playing with stuff to get everything really working well and stable enough to start experimenting with some sps over the last couple months, so that's where I'm at now.
I have been thinking a lot about the things I wished I would have done a little differently, most importantly my regret of using a siphon style overflow which once has failed me by overflowing the display. Luckily my wife caught it quickly and was able to fix it with my coaching as I was way way out of town. Nothing was harmed but it could have been MUCH worse. So anyway, I decided to get an old tank cheap, do a slight upgrade because the spot where my 4' tank is could fit a 5' tank, and frankly I know we cant buy a bigger house right now so I'm trying to optimize what I have now in an attempt to be satisfied for a while instead of wishing for a different house. And after starting reefing from not really having any aquarium experience before that, a year and a half of very slow progress to moderate success has been enough for me to get a game plan together of how to "do it better" this time. Still in this hobby my experience is very limited so I may be asking for some advice during the process as well.
Here is my game plan-
Clean, reseal, and drill the old 120 aquarium.
Clean, sand, and otherwise restore the all-pine stand that it came with. I also plan to add height to it at the bottom and add some reinforcement inside the stand.
I want to build a canopy to match the stand.

If you have never resealed a tank before... it’s a LOT. I resealed my 220 last year, you HAVE to disassemble the entire tank and sand/polish all the edges (where silicon will go) then rebuild the tank making sure no bubbles in the seams. Just re doing the inside seams does nothing for the structure of the tank it’s a very common misconception.
