Return flow or both?

Thinking of a small return pump added to my sump,,,not a lot of room in the return section
frag tank will be about 40 gal.
Then put a couple of mp40s and maybe a wav for the flow
In this situation does the size/flow of the return pump make a difference

That’s exactly what I’ve done with my big tank so yes you can. If I'm right in what I think your saying (hopefully! lol)

You need a certain amount of flow through the sump for the filtration systems, but most of the flow in the display will be provided by your MP40’s

If you check on the eco tech web site there is a flow calculator to tell you how many and which MP’s you need

In my case the sump flow is only around 3 x which is the way I wanted it for more contact time with the media down there.

You can do that. Light and flow will play significant role

Regardless of how you feed the frag tank, you are still going to want to get to 3-5X. I feed mine from one of the siphon drains from my display. 60 gallon frag tank; 250 gph flow through.
