I have a Red Sea Reefer 525XL with double return nozzles. I am interested in the best placement of the return nozzles. I have read it is a good idea to place them near the surface to create surface turbulence. Your thoughts?

I've always liked putting my returns at the ends of the tank away from the overflow myself, but it looks like the Red Sea returns come up through the overflow. In that case, surface turbulence is a good thing, but I would personally use them to increase flow in potential dead spots that your powerbeads might not get to.

Nice choice on the tank by the way!

Surface turbulence is definitely a good idea, not only for oxidation but if you don’t agitate the surface, you’ll start to notice a white film at the top of the water. You don’t necessarily need the return to do this, however, you can also use a power head.

Ultimately, the direction returns and power heads face depends on your aquascape and flow needs (types of corals you have). There’s a cool fitting for returns on BRS called a random flow generator that’s worth checking out.

Thanks!

Thanks; I have a pair of MP40 power heads set up on multiple modes. Great flow in tank.
