I'm trying to decide how I want to do my return plumbing. Forgive the very elementary picture, but just trying to provide a quick visual.

I want to minimize head pressure so I'm debating 2 different options:
Top: Using sweeping 90s. I know the sweeping 90s are better than a hard 90 elbow
Bottom: 45s

So top or bottom? Will it be negligible?

It’s negligible. BRS investigates did a study looking at sweeping elbows vs sharp elbows and there was basically no difference With 1” PVC. I was surprised and I felt like I wasted my time and energy designing sweeps into my manifold.

Awesome, thank you!

Using two 45 degree vs one 90 degree will give you more turbulence, creating more head pressure. I would use 90 degree if it were me doing the plumbing.

I wish they had this video when I built my last tank. 90’s definitely help with saving space under the tank. Just my .02

Since it doesn't seem to matter much with flow, I would do it so that it is easily accessible and pleasing to the eye.
If accessible isn't doable, then make sure you have unions, top and bottom.
