If you have the return partially out of the water in the tank it will siphon less back into your sump

Put in a siphon break......a place for air to be drawn in to break the cycle. Here are the ones I originally made. Water does shoot out of them when the pumps are running, but when they stop, and the water drains below this little pipe, it breaks the siphon. That little piece of tubing was epoxied into the fitting.

FYI, some just drill a hole, but for me, it splashed too much. That's why I added the little piece of tubing.
