Return plumbing

I've been stuck on how to finish plumbing to the tank. I've got a 3/4" bulkhead that doesn't seem to fit an elbow, so I've got this adapter piece... It just seems, not right. Please help.

That'll work. Or you can get a spigot style Male threaded 90 and leave out the threaded adapter.

I think I tried a spigot and it wouldn't fit. Should I use plumbers putty or tape?

On a 3/4 inch fitting I'd use tape.

I would have used slip bulkhead instead of threaded haven't had much luck of not getting a leak with threaded
Then use a a union below that then your elbow or elbow an Union

I agree. It's a dang art getting the right amount of tape on the threads. Lol
