Hi everyone - I'm in the very early stages of planning my first build of a 150gal display tank. I've decided on a location that is directly above where I'd like to set up my sump/fish room. I was looking at a Vectra L2 as a return pump. Elevation change is about 10ft and I don't expect many friction losses as it's a straight run to the tank directly above.

Am I crazy for trying to stick with a submersible? I'm looking closely at a Trigger Triton sump and would prefer to not drill it for a return pump, but I'll do whatever needs to be done (and am open to alternative suggestions). Photos below. Thanks in advance!

Proposed location of DT (don't mind the dog toy box!)

I looked at the flow X head chart and you should get 1000+ GPH at 10 feet. Will that be enough? You'll have some friction loss, but not much with straight run. I have a similar setup, but with 14-15 ft. of head. Went with a PanWorld AC external.

I would love have an Aby$$ or a Royal Exclusive. They are the only two DCs that deliver the head I need. I decide to go AC since I didn't want or need controllability.

That should be plenty of turnover. When I started looking into this I got the impression that submersibles might not be the best solution for this application, so I figured I'd ask. The Abyzz look incredible but that's a huge chunk of my budget.

@Billy617 does 10' include getting the water to the return point in your DT?

Also, a 150G will weigh a lot. So if you haven't already please make sure to check your floor joists to see how they'll support the tank.

Good luck!

Yes, that includes the return point in the DT, the only thing I haven't taken into account are losses due to fittings, but I think the L2 has plenty of reserve power left.

Thanks for the tip on the framing. I've got to crunch some numbers (structural engineer by trade) but I'll likely reinforce the floor joists to avoid excessive deflection.

Jebao DCP sine wave pumps are amazing. Dead quite and run great. Various models fit your bill.

I actually sold my Vectras to buy these pumps, I bought three for the price of one vectra.

If you go this route, do a double-pump setup for redundancy.
