Return Pump for Sump

Hi folks,

What capacity of return pump should I buy for my 40 gallon tank for the sump purpose? What is the GPH requirement for per gallon? I know, silly queston again, but I am really new to this.

Hey Mike, IME and IMHO the highest flow rate your drains can safely handle. Ijust left quite a long post in this thread a few minutes ago that relates to your question https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/reef-aquarium-discussion/143800-turnover-rate-reef-tank.html by no means the only way but strongly feel that its by far the best way and have done so successfully for decades.
