I was looking into a return pump for my tank build and thought based on head loss at approximately 5' the VarioS 6 would work for a 100 gallon DT. In looking I see people using the Eheim 1260 which is rated at 640 GPH before head loss calculations for a 120 gallon.

What am I missing?

Yeah, that 1260 would be a really weak pump in my opinion. At 5ft of head pressure, it only outputs about 420gph... which is 3.5x turnover on a 120. Most reefers like to shoot for around 5x - 10x turnover. I prefer a high flow through my sump. I run a 3100gph pump on roughly a 112 gallon tank. However, I am running a manifold off of the return pump, which feeds three reactors. I also have a few elbows in my plumbing.

Either one will work. There is more than one way to go about it.
The Eheim will be a little on the slow side, but that's alright.
I've heard from a couple friends who have tried the VarioS pumps, and they are happy with them.
