Just set up a 75 gal salt, going to be running a eshopps rs 100 sump and a eshopps pf 800 overflow box. Wondering if anyone can help me with what return pump to purchase. Approximately 5 feet of plumbing from return to tank with a few elbows, a check valve and a ball valve. My first sump. Any help would be great.

Are you wanting a AC or DC pump?
What size pipe do you plan to use?

These things will help us guide you.

A simple, quiet and reliable pump would be the Sicce Syncra silent 3, I've run my 75 with it for 5 years now.

I would explore drilled options if you can, especially if this is a new build and it's either still dry or can be safely drained.
If you really will run a hang on overflow, lose the check valve. There is absolutely no redundancy in the PF 800 and the slightest blockage in the drain will cause the tank to overflow. Consider a gate valve instead of a ball valve, it will make tuning a lot easier and safer.

Welcome to the group. Glad that you joined.

There are tons of pump choices out there. If this is your first set up I would keep it simple. Eheim, Sicce, and Rio are good choices. (Most don’t like Rio but I like them) an Eheim 1262 or larger Rio would work. Always get more pump than you need. It leaves options to use on a future larger tank if needed.

As mentioned research the plumbing a bit more. Hob overflows work if set up correctly but there are several way to set up a tank to have safety system to avoid floods

And #WelcometoR2R. Start a build and meet thread if like

Which pump....... hmmmm that's a loaded question ;)

How much you want to spend on said pump would be a good start. You could get away with spending under $100 or over $200/300.
DC or AC = controllability of how much output the pump has without using a valve.
Sicce, Eflux, Vortex, Ehiem, Lifeguard and Jabeo/Jecod all make decent pumps.

You definitely want to read more on HOB overflows and preventing flooding. (Been there, done that...)

And Welcome to R2R ! ! !

Lot's of great advice above. It's like everything else in the hobby, you can spend as much as you want. In retrospect, I upgraded to an expensive DC controllable pump and surprise, surprise...I can't remember the last time I "controlled" it. I kept my Sicce Syncra Silent 5.0 as a back up and if my DC pump ever goes out I'll buy another AC pump and have a back up for less than I spent on the DC pump.

Another question is what do you plan to do with the pump? Just run your sump, sump + manifold or sump+manifold+in tank circulation. I rely on my powerheads for 90% of my in tank circulation and only run a couple of reactors off of my manifold so I probably don't need as big of a pump as I have.

Sicce Syncra as mentioned above is a great choice. Ran a 3.0 on my 40 gallon breeder and now running a 4.0 on my 75. Great pumps that do a good job :)

Thanks for all the help, seams like I have alot to consider before making a choice. Love I said it's my first time running a sump so all new to me. Thanks again guys.
