Hi! New to this hobby...

I have a 120 gallon with a 40 gal sump. Getting a ESHOPPS PF-1000 HOB overflow. Searching the forum I find very mixed reviews. What would be the ideal pump balancing price/quality/noise. Noise is big factor due to where the tank is located.

An adjustable one (or a gate valve on the return itself) would be best to balance to ensure a quiet overflow. When I started getting serious into reefing, I purchased one of the ecotech returns (S1 maybe?) and it lasted all of 2 years. Since then, I have gone cheap and kept a spare.. Much more cost effective and I don't have to scramble if the pump goes.

Energy efficiency is good to check. Those pumps can get expensive to run if you go too cheap though :)

I currently use Jebao return pumps. Large, energy efficient, and dead quiet.

The overflow will handle 1000gph at max. your pump needs will be based on that plus your head height. Head height puts pressure on the pump reducing the output. It is deturmined by how high it has to pump water and if it goes thru any turns or 90 degree fittings ect.... My suggestion is you get a pump rated for around 1500 gph or a little more. Put a valve after the pumps exit so you can dial it back if needed to keep your overflow running at its max with out too much noise

Syncra ADV 5.5 Water Pump
Max Flow: 1450 GPH
Max Head: 10 FT

Syncra ADV 7.0 Water Pump
Max Flow: 1900 GPH
Max Head: 11.5 FT

Howdy and welcome

I have the current USA eflux DC return pump 1050 for my 93 gallon....absolutely love it. Completely quiet, you can adjust the speed from 0 to full speed. I run mine at about 40%. Have had it for almost two years, still running like new. I give it 5.0 out of 5.0 rating.

Hope this helps

Welcome to R2R!!! Usually DC pumps are quieter, but a quiet pump is only part of it. Making sure that the overflow and drain is quiet is also key.

Thanks for all the info! I think I'll go with the Syncra pump.

What's the difference between the Sicce ADV and the silent series?
