Is it better to use a power head or return pump to mix salt water? I was thinking about going with a dc6000 return pump so that I could use it to pump water into the tank.

Pump. I use a 1300 pump n it works great plus I can use it to pump the water into the tank. If u look around on for sale forums u can get em for around ten bucks. I picked up 2 1300s for ten bucks.

Awesome. Thank you. I'm doing my initial setup for my 90 gallon with a 35 gallon sump. Would 2 of those be good to mix 100 gallons and than just use 1 for my 10 % weekly water change?

Also if I am using it to pump water back into my tank I'm guessing it's bad to run out of water for it to pump. Would I have to leave enough in the tank to not have it sick in air?

I use a powerhead in my two connected 44 gallon Brute cans to mix salt water.
I use a MUCH slower pump (30 gallons per day) to send salt water to my tank for automatic water changes.

I use a 1300 to mix 40 gallons n it stirs it up pretty good. If your starting a new tank you could always use the sump pump to stir it n then jus put it back in the sump when your done mixing. As for weekly water changes a 1300 pump would be more than enough.
