I started with a canister filter over a year ago. Now I have a sump, but instead of buying a noisy powerhead I still use canister as return pump. Do you think this is too much filter now. Would it be better to buy a powerhead

You can put carbon or such in media bag in canister and use as reactor as well as return pump.
Question is does canister move enough water to give good flow in the tank?

It should be fine. The main issue will be how hard it is to maintain the canister.
In fresh water they are kind of fire-and-forget...clean them a few times a year at most.
In saltwater you'll want clean it weekly unless you take some special precautions to make sure it doesn't accumulate detritus. Usually that means keeping it empty or mostly empty. It definitely means no mechanical filtration.
Measure the output from the canister and see what GPH you're getting.....let us know the results!
